Interview-Christopher Totten* (Samantha/Sam)
Christopher Totten, who plays Samantha/Sam in Love! That 4-Letter Word, is a delightful
fellow with a wonderful grin and playful personality. Nobody can ever say this guy is a heel;
he just wears them sometimes. Christopher hails from Jeffersonville, IN.
What bought you to NYC?
I came here to succeed in the biz!
A week after I graduated from college, I rented a U-haul and two friends of mine and
I packed up our stuff and came to the big city! I began rehearsals for my first gig,
the NETworks national tour of Cinderella, three months later!
Is it a career for you? How do you feel about that?
As opposed to a hobby? Absolutely! I am happiest
when I’m on the stage.
What do you like most about your character in Love!?
Hmmm. Good question. I think it’s his inner struggle
that makes him most interesting. He is on a quest to find himself. He has given up who he once
was and has no idea who he is or who or what he wants to be. Everyone can identify with that on
some level.
Any personal stage stories we should hear?
Yes!! When I was a little boy, I loved watching the
movie Annie. The first stage show I ever saw was Annie at the Kentucky Center for the Arts.
The first play I ever did was Annie. Yep, at the age of thirteen, I played the role of Oliver
Warbucks! My first professional job in New York City was playing Nathan Leopold in Thrill Me:
The Leopold and Loeb Story, which was directed by Martin Charnin, who co-wrote Annie.
A year later, Martin Charnin cast me in the national tour of Annie, which he himself
directed! How awesome is that!??! I LOVE THAT STORY!
Your favorite personal love story
Personal love story? Hmmm. That would have to be the
story of my first true love. We were very young and didn’t really know how to handle it.
Years have passed and we’re still good friends.
Your favorite old love song?
I love the song "Come Rain or Come Shine" by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer.
Favorite place for a date in NY and why
I like any place that has a lively atmosphere.
Live music is always a plus. Is this turning into a personals ad?!?!?
Is romance alive today? How do you know?
It is really difficult to tell. I like to think so,
but I really think it depends on the person(s) involved. If I have learned anything through
dating, it’s that romance can’t be forced or manufactured. It has to just be.
Have you been in love? What is/was it like?
I have. It was wonderful and awful at the same time.
I don’t regret it one bit.
